What is X Dim Mode?
X Dim Mode is a free Chrome extension that restores the Dim background theme that X (formerly Twitter) removed. It brings back the dark blue look many users preferred — plus 5 additional color themes and a custom color picker.
Why did X remove the Dim theme?
In early 2026, X replaced Dim with a single dark mode (Lights Out). No official reason was given, but many users found the pure black background harsher on the eyes — especially on LCD screens where Dim's dark blue offered better contrast and comfort.
Does it slow down my browser?
No. X Dim Mode is extremely lightweight — it only injects a small CSS override on x.com. There's no background processing, no tracking, and no performance impact.
Does it work on Firefox or Safari?
X Dim Mode is available for Chrome (and Chromium-based browsers like Edge, Brave, and Arc) and Firefox. Safari support is coming soon.
Is my data safe?
Yes. X Dim Mode doesn't collect, store, or transmit any personal data. It has no analytics, no accounts, and no server calls. The full source code is open for inspection.
Does this work on Twitter?
Yes! Twitter rebranded to X in 2023, but the platform is the same — just at x.com instead of twitter.com. If you miss the old Twitter Dim mode or the Twitter dark blue theme, this extension brings it right back.
Will it keep working if X updates their site?
